Royal Tichelaar Makkum is the oldest business in the Netherlands. Originally a manufacturer of bricks, the business evolved through the centuries to produce tiles, plates and later decorated earthenware.
Traditional skills and craftsmanship are employed in the making of Makkum earthenware. Each piece is formed with care from local Frisian clay and painted by hand.
A white tin-glaze forms the base for the brilliance of colours in Makkum earthenware. Royal Tichelaar Makkum is the only factory remaining that stays true to the original Majolica technique.
